Authentic and Expert Belfast Black Cab Experience

Experience an unparalleled journey into Belfast’s complex past with the ‘Conflicting Stories’ tour, guided by men who not only participated in the thirty-year conflict known as the Troubles, but also contributed to bringing it to an end. This unique tour is delivered by two taxi drivers, representing each of the city’s divided communities. Guests will switch taxis at the halfway point at the renowned ‘Peace Walls’, symbolising the city’s enduring divisions and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

This is the only tour in Belfast led by verified ex-combatants who were directly involved in the Troubles. The tour content is grounded in validated academic research authored by one of the guides, as well as their own personal memories and political perspectives. Travelling through the city’s once-troubled streets in two iconic Belfast taxi cabs, you will visit both sides of the Peace Line. The guides—ex-prisoners or former British Army soldiers—share their personal stories and provide insights into the murals and memorials that tell the rich, complex history and culture of each community.

Modern-day Belfast remains both religiously and politically divided, with working-class areas separated by 21 miles of physical walls, some reaching 45 feet in height and punctuated by gates that open each day and close each night. During the Troubles, few, if any, escaped the violence that gripped the city, and nearly everyone has a story to tell from that difficult era.

On this immersive experience, you will hear first-hand accounts from both sides of this conflict zone—a rare opportunity to learn the true stories behind the Troubles, as told by those who lived through them. You will also discover the purpose and meaning of Belfast’s world-famous murals, earning the city its reputation as the world’s largest outdoor art gallery, with ample opportunities to take photographs of these striking works of art.

Your experience begins with pick-up by a licensed driver-guide, a former combatant, outside the Ibis Hotel at the corner of Castle and King Streets. You will travel through their community, learning about their political beliefs and role in the Troubles, before transferring to a second taxi after an hour to hear a different perspective from another driver-guide. While you are welcome to ask questions, not all can be answered due to ongoing legal matters relating to the past. What you will receive is a truly unique experience, led by individuals once committed to resolving conflict through violence who are now dedicated to peace and democracy. This exceptional tour has been rated 5 Stars and 10/10 by global review agencies
